What should I do first when my roof starts leaking?

Move people and valuables away from the water, especially near light fixtures, and put a container under the drip. If water is near electrical fixtures, keep clear and consider shutting that circuit off at the breaker. Photograph the damage inside and out, then call for emergency roof repair. Do not climb onto a wet roof yourself.

Should I go up on the roof myself after it fails?

No. A wet or storm-damaged roof is slick and may have hidden soft spots in the decking that will not hold weight. The safe move is to document what you can see from the ground and from inside the attic, then let a crew with fall protection handle the roof itself.

Does emergency roof repair help with my insurance claim?

Yes, when it is documented. A contractor who photographs the damage, itemizes the emergency work in writing, and records the date gives the homeowner evidence the carrier can tie to a storm. SCR provides that documentation and coordinates with the adjuster, though the homeowner remains the party to the claim.
